Some people would ask me why am I doing this blogging-thing? Why didn't just I concentrate on my day job? The short answer is to earn passive income. I would like to slowly transfer from being an employee to being self-employed as described in Robert Kiyosaki's Cashflow Quadrant. My long-term goal is to be a big-time investor or at least become a business-owner who owns a system that works and provides a steady cash flow. But to get there, I need to become self-employed from being an employee. And one opportunity that I saw was earning passive income online. But the question is - Is it really possible to make money online?
What is Passive Income?
When you do not spend a lot of time or put much effort or when you earn even while you sleep, that's passive income. We can earn passive income from different sources such as investment products, stock photography, book selling, software application, rental income, etc. Most business owners and investors take benefit from passive income. They just spent a little time or effort and money flows in. Sometimes, they don't even need to bother checking, they will just be informed that someone's brought their product or a cheque has been delivered from them. Passive income earners just wake up one morning with more money to invest or just spend right away.
Passive income in Blogging
Personally, one of my goals is to have passive income. That may be coming from investment products such as stocks or mutual funds but right now I am focusing on building online assets. Slowly but surely as they say. What you only need to do is be consistent and stay updated. Building an online asset can be very tedious at first but once you got the hang of it, it will be worth it.
Blogging has been a part of the world wide web for a long time. It is a shortcut of the word 'web log' that can be of various kinds. Today, millions of websites are considered as blogs and a certain percentage of it has become a money making machine. Once you have established your blog's authority, it will be regularly visited by people directly or referred by search engine (organic traffic), social networking sites or even from other blogs. The amount of income you can get is limited by the amount of traffic you have. You can earn from as little as $1 per month, $10 per day or even $1000 per month or higher.
Sweat and Blood Efforts
But that won't be easy. The challenge with having a passive income in blogging is the competition from other bloggers. The playing field is not small. There are thousands or even millions of bloggers around the world that you have to compete to. Your blog should be unique and should have quality content to be regularly visited by readers. Even the technical side of blogging is hard for beginners. Creating content can be easy especially for experienced writers. But that's not the whole part of the story. You also need to make your site reader-friendly. You must provide good site aesthetics such as responsiveness, readability and easy to use navigation for your users. No one will ever come back to a page where readers cannot comfortably read the content, right? You must also learn Search Engine Optimization so that people will find your blog from search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo! and many more. Honestly, most of your potential readers may come from search engines because people use search engines in order to find something. If you can make your blog in the first page of the search engine results, the better it is for you.
Can you really earn from blogging?
The short answer is Yes. I have been witness to several success stories from people who made fortune and passive income from blogging. Some might have regular day job from 8 to 5 but most of them work at the comforts of their home. Some even write posts while on vacation or even from a coffee shop.
